In 2016, three new wind parks were launched in Pagėgiai, Mažeikiai and Šilutė municipalities.
In February 2016, the largest wind farm in Lithuania, UAB Amberwind, with a capacity of 73.5 MW, was opened in the municipality of Pagėgiai.
In June 2016, a 45 MW wind park of UAB Pamario jėgainių energija in the municipality of Mažeikiai, financed by AB Swedbank, started operations.
In July 2016, the second largest wind farm in Lithuania, a 60 MW wind farm operated by UAB Šilutės vėjo projektai, started operating. The wind farm is equipped with 24 highly modern General Electric GE 2.5-120 wind turbines with a height of 110 metres. The park is calculated to generate 230 GWh of electricity annually.
A bit of history...
The first demonstration wind farm of UAB Dalis gero with an installed capacity of 600 kW in Vydmantai was commissioned in spring 2004 and by the end of the year had generated 1.2 MWh of electricity.
The Benaičiai wind park, which became operational in Kretinga district at the end of 2006, was declared fit for use by the State Commission on 17 March 2007. The wind farm has a capacity of 16 MW and generates about 44 million kWh of electricity per year. In the village of Benaičiai, Darbėnai municipality, six V100 2.75-3 type wind farms are installed. UAB Renerga purchased the equipment for the wind farms from the Danish company Vestas.
This was gradually followed by the installation of wind farms by UAB Energopliusas, UAB Energogrupė, 2 wind farms by UAB Vėjo gūsis, UAB Vėjo vatas and UAB Gemba.
At the end of 2010, one of the largest objects belonging to the members of the Association - UAB Renerga - was put into operation - the 34 MW capacity wind farm Benaičiai-1. The park generates about 86 million kWh of electricity per year and significantly reduces CO2 emissions. Seventeen Enercon E-82 type wind turbines have been installed at the wind farm in the villages of Benaičiai, Žyneliai and Pelėķiai in the Darbėnai municipality of Kretinga district. The height of the wind power plants in the park reaches 97 m. UAB Renerga purchased the wind power equipment from the German company Enercon, the leader in the production of equipment in this field, which produces some of the most modern and powerful wind power plants in Europe and worldwide.
Since its establishment, the wind farms of the association's members have generated around 3.7 billion kWh of electricity. This amount of electricity would require the combustion of around 660 million m3 of natural gas. Burning this amount of natural gas would release over 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
The Lithuanian Wind Power Association's members have invested €800 million in wind farms. Total investment in the sector exceeds €1 billion.
